The build up to the 2008 Newcastle Community Green Festival has begun. And this year the festival returns to its roots with an emphasis on education through entertainment - let's make living a cleaner, greener, more sustainable life fun!
Still run by volunteers this year's festival promises to be the biggest ever. We are particularly looking forward to welcoming more visitors from the broad cross-section of city life. COMPLETELY FREE, and for just one day, Middlesborough Music Festival has got a fantastic reputation for finding good bands just before they make it big. Last year Shy Child and I Was A Cub Scout were just two of the breakthrough acts. This year has, so far, got a really interesting mix of artists and more and more are being confirmed as June 1st gets closer. I’m really excited about Black Kids; a Florida 5-piece who are garnering interest with their new song ‘I’m Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You’ (check out the wicked remix by The Twelves if you’re into that sort of stuff). They’re just a little bit wild and kooky, and their mix of electro-indie brings together two of my favourite types of music. They come across as a band who are going to be AMAZING to watch live, with stage presence and buckets of banter. Also confirmed is Esser – artist, not band (and not the French race car driver) – think Damon Albarn reincarnated in one of those robot-suits with a built in Merry-Go-Round Organ and you’re getting there; definitely someone to watch out for. Infadels have also just been confirmed; they’re a band that honestly took a while for me to enjoy but when you peel back the standard guitars, bass, drums etc, you get a really genuine band making a really genuine statement about their lives. Who can’t relate to the lyrics in ‘Make Mistakes’? Alphabeat are, to my utter dismay, unable to do Boro, having just announced they need to pull out! But luckily my new love, Late of the Pier, are making a snappy, clappy, poppy, stylistic, synthridden appearance. One Night Only are making an appearance with their brand of non-offensive music, while Ash return from the musical grave to do… something. Myspace Favourite YouMeAt6 are also playing and I mean this when I tell you, these young pups are absolutely immense. I’ve been friends with them on Myspace for about 3 years (meeting them at a house party in Leeds. What a weekend). They supported and surpassed Elliot Minor at the Carling Academy in April and are going to do big things. Everything about them is well refined and nicely tied together. With catchy choruses even the biggest names in commercial indie couldn’t write (go and download Gossip NOW I promise you it is some breed of incredible…) All in all this festival will be a great way for people to get out and listen to new music. And it’s free!
