The Swing Dance Society

By Amy Frampton

Do you swing? If not or you are interested in learning, the Swing Dance Society is the answer for you.
‘Swing’ is a broad term for several dance styles and also refers to a specific style of music and the culture from the 1930s onwards. We mainly learn Lindy, one of the most popular styles danced. It is a partner dance so is a great opportunity to meet lots of new people and socialise, and leads towards social dancing as well as more competitive or choreographed show dancing. swing

Swing Society meets on Monday nights at 8pm in Havelock Hall, Castle Leazes. We have both a beginner’s lesson, intermediate lesson and a chance to try out your new moves in a social dance. It costs just £5 to join as a member which will get you reduced lessons and money off socials. We can also get reduced prices as a society to other swing events up and down the country for the real swing enthusiasts! Even if you are not a member, come along and try it out.

It really doesn’t matter if you have never tried Swing before.  It is easy to pick up once you have mastered which foot is right and which is left and after that you are away!

Coming up we are putting on “Newcastle Swing Thing”; Newcastle’s first swing dance weekender on the weekend of 23rd-24th February. Prices start from just £15 for one day of lessons and taster classes in more specific moves or £30 for a weekend pass which also gets you into the Saturday night party which includes a live jazz band in Global, in the Union (tickets available separately).
